Who is responsible

This notice covers our website, accounts, messages and user posts. Other websites have their own policies.

Information and purposes

• Accounts: We store your name, email and a secure hash of your password. We also keep your account role, history and email verification status. These let us run your account. If you choose Google sign-in, Google shares your name, verified email and sign-in details. We do not receive your Google password.
• User posts: We store your text, edits, comments and display name. We also keep review decisions and feedback. These let us review and manage posts. Approved public comments show the author's name. Choose a display name you are happy to share.
• Messages: We keep your name, email, subject, message and replies. These help us answer and track your request.
• Security: We record IP addresses, security events, request limits and account status. If used, we also store two-factor setup details, hashed recovery codes and trusted-device records. These protect accounts and help stop misuse. Our host may keep access and error logs too.
• Cookies: We store your choice and session details to remember settings and protect forms. If enabled and allowed by you, Google reCAPTCHA checks technical data and your actions for spam. See our cookie policy.
• Analytics: With your consent, Google Analytics measures use of public pages. It receives technical and activity data, including browser details and the IP address used to connect. Analytics is off on account, sign-in, submission, contact and admin pages. We do not send passwords, email addresses or verification tokens as analytics fields. See our cookie policy.

Providing an email and account details is necessary to register. Required contact fields let us reply. You can read public articles without registering. Refusing optional cookies does not prevent reading or submitting forms.

Legal bases

We use these legal bases:

• Contract: to provide the account services you request under our agreement with you.
• Legitimate interests: to secure the site, review posts and answer messages. We must balance these needs against your rights.
• Legal obligation: where the law requires us to keep or share information.
• Consent: for optional reCAPTCHA checks and analytics from Google and Ahrefs. Spam checks and analytics have separate choices in Cookie settings. You can withdraw either at any time. This does not change the lawfulness of earlier use.

Religious beliefs and sensitive information

Reading about a religion does not mean you belong to it. We do not ask for your religion. We do not use your reading to guess your beliefs. Please write about traditions and sources. Do not share private beliefs, health details or other sensitive facts about yourself or others.

If you share these details by mistake, contact us. We will assess whether to remove or hide them. Publishing sensitive personal details needs a separate legal review. Sending text does not give us consent to use it for every purpose.

Recipients and overseas processing

Staff with permission may use the information needed for their work. Hosting, database and email providers may also need it to run these services. Other people can read and copy public posts. Search engines can list them. We may share information if the law requires it. We may also need to share it to bring or defend legal claims.

Google receives information if you choose Google sign-in, allow an enabled reCAPTCHA service, or allow Google Analytics. Read Google's privacy policy. These services may use data outside the UK. Ask us for details of our providers, where they use data and the safeguards for overseas transfers. Links to sources do not load the other website until you follow them.

Ahrefs also receives analytics requests when you allow analytics. It provides traffic summaries for public pages. Ahrefs says its standard service does not use cookies or persistent identifiers. Read Ahrefs' privacy policy. You can turn off both analytics services in Cookie settings.

How long information is kept

How long we keep data depends on why we need it. We consider active accounts, open requests, disputes, security and legal duties. We need account details while your account is active. We may still need message and review records after a request ends. Public posts may stay online after you stop using an account. Your data rights still apply.

Expired verification links and device permissions do not automatically delete database records. We review deletion requests and whether we still need the data. We do not promise a fixed automatic deletion period. Backups and server logs may have separate rules. Contact us to ask how long we keep your data or to request deletion. Our cookie policy lists cookie lifetimes.

Your rights and complaints

Depending on the circumstances, you may ask us to:

• Give you a copy of your data.
• Correct or delete it.
• Limit how we use it.
• Give you data in a form you can move to another service.

You can also object to use based on legitimate interests and withdraw consent. These rights have legal limits. We may need enough information to check your identity. We normally reply within one month. If the law allows more time, we will explain why.

Contact us by email, form, phone or post. Tell us which account or data you mean. Do not send identity documents unless we ask through a secure route. You can also complain to the ICO. You do not have to contact us first.

Spam checks and request limits may block a post. We do not use them to make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on you. Contact us if you think a post was blocked by mistake.

Children and changes

Anyone can read the articles. Children should not send or post details that identify them. Parents and guardians can contact us about a child's data. We will review reported problems and take appropriate action.

We may update this notice if the site or its use of data changes. The date above shows this version. If a change needs new consent, we will ask again.
